26/02/13 – VW Golf GTD 2013 Diesel Hot Hatch

VW’s Golf GTD – a performance diesel brother to the GTI hot hatch – is here. It boasts more punch than the old GTD (an extra 12bhp and 14lb ft), and scores better fuel economy to 67.3mpg, if you opt for the six-speed manual gearbox.

How fast is the 2013 VW Golf GTD?

The Golf GTD hits 62mph in 7.5sec and 142mph flat out, improvements of 0.6sec and 4mph over the outgoing car. Like its predecessor, the new GTD runs a 2.0-litre common-rail turbo diesel engine, driving the front wheels. You can have a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox as a cost option, which drops fuel economy to 60.1mpg. CO2 output is 109g/km for the manual, and 119-122g/km for the auto.

What sporty upgrades do Golf GTDs get?

The body kit is largely shared with the Golf GTI concept car from the 2012 Paris motor show – notes the roof spoiler, wider front grille and flared aside skirts. GTDs ride on 17-inch alloy wheels, with sports suspension as standard.

Inside, there are trademark tartan seats – leather upholstery is an option if you don’t want fabric. Other GTD trinkets include a flat-bottom steering wheel, stainless steel pedals, white ambient lighting and front and rear parking sensors. Plus, the gearlever is of course dimpled like a golf ball, in the finest hot Golf tradition.

When can I buy a Golf GTD?

UK sales start in April 2013. VW hasn’t announced prices for the British market yet, but with German RRPs starting at €29,350, reckon on a basic three-door Golf GTD setting you back around £25,000.
